So for several years my daughter’s high school has had this thing called power hour where students had a break in the middle of the day. During this break they were able to have lunch, go to tutoring with teachers, or just have a break. This year all that has changed. They have put all the kids into classes and split everyone up into two lunches. So today was the first day of school and consequently my son’s first day at the high school. The lunch room was so crowded that he didn’t even get to have lunch today. During my daughter’s lunch many of the students spent the majority of the time standing in line to get food instead of eating. I am really concerned about this situation because I feel like this change is not in the best interest of the students. The administration claims that during the lunch time class that students will get enrichment but today the activity they did was a complete waste of time. Rather than giving my children a stupid class that they are actually getting a grade for I would much rather they just had study hall or things went back to the way they were before. I know that in education things change all the time but I don’t think it’s necessary to change things that are working for students and teachers. I refuse to just accept changes that prevent students from having time to eat lunch. I sent an email to the principal and the superintendent tonight letting them both know what happened and that I expect things to be corrected. Who knows whether or not they will do anything about it but at least I have let them know that I won’t hesitate to bring it to their attention.
