Assignment 1- Brainstorming through chosen topics

Assignment 1:

Summary of Assignment:

This assignment is intended to be ongoing over the course of the school year.  The idea is that the students will choose a topic from the handout to write about every Friday for ten minutes. They will have the option of changing topics every week or continuing a previous topic. The students will choose to entries to be graded at the end of each six weeks.  The writing will be graded for content and ideas rather than grammar and sentence structure. This activity will give the students a chance to write on a regular basis just for the sake of writing. The idea is that students could potentially go back and look at their writing and possibly gain ideas for their more formal writing assignments. An extension of the assignment could involve students choosing one piece of their writing to be edited and posted to a class page to share. The idea with the extension is to provide a safe place for students to share their ideas.

Instructions to Students:

You will be required to choose a topic from the chart every Friday and write for ten uninterrupted minutes. You may write about a topic more than once but you must write the date in the box every time you write about the topic. At the end of every six weeks you will choose two journals to be graded and one that will be edited and posted to the class page. You will write for five weeks and then you will edit one piece and choose two to be graded.  I will give you a rubric in order to help you focus your efforts. When I grade the journals every six weeks I will check to make sure that you have at least five entries but I will only look at the content for the two you select. After all students have posted to the class page you will be required to post positive and constructive comments about the at least two of your classmates postings.

Reflection of Assignment:

The students are required to put the date in the chart for every journal entry they write so I will be able to tell pretty quickly which topics are more interesting to my students. I plan to use the data I get from the charts to better refine my topics for each six weeks.

Expectation:

My hope is the students will be able to use their ideas and content from their writing journals to create more involved essays.
